Sunset Terrace Bag
Study 01 – Part I
A study in color, repetition and construction.
It started with color.
Bordeaux, coral, orange, apricot and sand – warm tones somewhere between late summer light and a southern sunset.
The palette became a granny square.
And the granny square became a study.
The first square grew round by round, repeating the same simple structure while the colors shifted across the surface. As it became larger, something else became visible: the square began to rotate.
At first the movement was subtle. With every additional round, it became more pronounced.
Rather than correcting the finished square, the construction became part of the experiment.
A change in direction.
The structure was gradually adjusted.
The hook became smaller.
The chain spaces between the granny clusters disappeared, creating a denser surface.
And then the direction changed.
Instead of working every round in the same direction, each new round was turned. The starting corner moved around the square as well.
The small change in process had a surprisingly visible effect.
The rotation disappeard.
The surface became calmer and more compact.
The edges became straighter.
Repetition remained – but the way it was repeated had changed.
The first square stayed exactly as it was.
Its slightly more open structure and visible movement became part of the bag: the base, and at the same time a record of the process that led to the next version.
The four side panels were made by using the revised construction.
The same colors.
The same granny structure.
A different direction.
Round after round, four nearly identical surfaces emerged.
Not because every irregularity had been removed, but because the process had become more deliberate.
And now, five flat pieces are waiting to become a bag.
Holding on to summer.
Sunset Terrace was never intended as an autumn project.
It grew out of warm colors, late summer light and the feeling of a southern sunset.
And somehow, just as everything around it begins to turn towards autumn, those same colors suddenly belong to the season.
Bordeaux. Coral. Orange. Apricot. Sand.
For now, though, Sunset Terrace is staying exactly where it began:
somewhere in the last light of summer.
